Conservatories, Intensives & Camps

ZBS Conservatory

The ZBS Conservatory is an in-depth, online training spanning several areas of professional and artistic concentration throughout the year.  Taught by the incomparable ZBS Faculty, who combine their extensive professional experience in film and television, with their experience at many of the great conservatories from around the world: Julliard, NYU, Suny Purchase, The Old Globe, Trinity Rep, American Conservatory Theater, The Actors Studio and so on.

The program weaves personal development, with artistic craft and industry need resulting in actors who know themselves and the market, and are able to consistently access what makes them grounded, indispensable, and creatively resilient.

The program meets 3 days/week, online, and is structured with various entry points, allowing students to commit to one month, three-month or yearly increments. As the conservatory is primarily designed for working actors, specific accommodations are made allowing actors to work while in the program and pausing their membership for larger bookings.

ZBS Intensives

The ZBS Intensives are in-person, all-day, weeklong immersive that are meant to complement the ZBS Conservatory, as well as function as independent courses of study.  This allows actors in the conservatory to work-in-person with the actors they have been training with throughout the year, as well as opening the door to fresh perspectives from new actors, not in the conservatory, seeking a more intensive course of study.  The Intensives also feature a panel of industry experts (showrunners, directors, casting directors, executives, and community leaders) that are navigating and setting the evolving trends of Hollywood on a daily basis.

Enrollment Options

Students can choose to enroll in a singular conservatory or intensive, or participate in ZBS’ comprehensive “Certificate Program”.

The “Certificate Program” is our most comprehensive program, combining ZBS Membership, with 10 months of Conservatory and 2 in-person intensives throughout the year. Students who complete the full certificate program will get an official certificate celebrating their course of study, as well as a virtual showcase for top Casting Directors and Reps.

“If you’re not having fun, then you’re doing something wrong” –Jordan Peele

The key to each actor’s creative genius lies in their sense of play.  Too often, in this industry and in this world, we think that mining our pain will lead to our best performance—when what is most often overlooked (and often overlooked) is tapping into our joy.  Taught by the incomparable ZBS faculty, we will combine the meaningful, professional and holistic training ZBS is known for, with some true summer fun, like…mask making for performance, online cabarets, outdoor performance art, come as your favorite character dance parties and much much (much) more!  This is not only an enormous opportunity to evolve your art, but to have a ridiculously good time doing it.

Conservatory & Intensive:
Art of the Breakout

ZBS is recognized by top Hollywood Reps, Casting Directors, and Industry Leaders for the cultivation of “Breakout Stars”.  “The Art of the Breakout” provides insights from Zak and our extraordinary ZBS Faculty on the process of aligning actors with their unique presence and purpose, by delving deep into each actor’s shadow.  Students quickly learn that, as Zak likes to say, “your curse, is your gift, is your brand”—that the part of yourself that is mostly hidden from view is the key to your inherent star quality.  By creating a safe & supportive atmosphere that pushes students beyond their comfort zone, students will gain the courage to allow all of themselves to be seen.

ZBS’ signature intensive, this is the secret sauce that has led to ZBS cultivating countless breakout stars since its inception and nearly 200 Series Regular Bookings from 2018-2020.

Episodic

Two of the biggest mistakes an actor can make—not understanding the tone and style of a show, and thinking the scene is about them.” –Said Every Casting Director Ever

Television is going through a true renaissance. With a wide variety of content platforms, and writers experimenting with a mix of traditional genres, actors need to be particularly sensitive to the material they are working with, in both tone and style, and nuance their performance accordingly.  Similarly, actors need to understand the role of a co, guest and recurring guest star, as opposed to a series regular, and how those roles vary greatly across different genres. The sister to the Pilot Intensive, the Episodic Conservatory & Intensive is focused on bringing an actor’s nuanced awareness of the writer’s intent across multiple genres, as they learn the art and practicality of auditioning for co, guest and recurring guest star roles during episodic season.
